NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A motorcyclist who collided with a bicyclist in the area of Huntington Avenue and 51st Street in Newport News Tuesday has died.

Around 3:45 p.m. the motorcycle involved in the incident was traveling south on Huntington Ave., when it struck a bicyclist attempting to cross the street, police said.

The motorcyclist, identified as Caleb Mark Welch, 24, of Newport News, sustained life threatening injuries after losing control of his motorcycle in the aftermath of making contact with the bicyclist, an unidentified 50-year-old Newport News man.

Police said Welch was traveling at a high speed and struck a utility pole and crashed off the roadway after hitting the bicyclist. They do not believe that alcohol was a contributing factor to the incident.

Welch and the bicyclist were both transported to a local hospital, where Welch was later pronounced dead shortly after 6 p.m. The bicyclist appeared to have non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and investigators will consult with the Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office regarding any possible charges.
