Meteorologist Myles Henderson’s First Warning Forecast

***Tropical Storm Warning for Dare County***

***Flash Flood Watch for most of Hampton Roads and NE NC through this evening***

***High Wind Warning for Currituck, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Hampton, Poquoson, Accomack, and Northampton***

***Coastal Flood Watch for most of coastal Hampton Roads from this afternoon through this evening***

Rain moving out, winds cranking up… An area of low pressure continues to slide along the Carolina coast today. While this system may not officially become a tropical storm it will have a similar impact. Rain will become more scattered this afternoon and will move out tonight into early Wednesday. Winds will continue to ramp up this with gusts to 50+ mph possible along the coast. The strong NE winds will trigger minor to moderate tidal flooding this afternoon. It will also kick up rough surf and a high risk for rip currents.

A few isolated showers may linger for Wednesday morning but most of the day will be dry. Clouds will gradually break up and clear out tomorrow. Winds will relax considerably but tomorrow afternoon. As the winds calm down our tide levels will gradually return to more normal levels. We will see a nice mix of sun and clouds for the end of the week with a small chance for showers. Highs will warm into the 80s on Thursday but return to the 70s on Friday.

Today: Cloudy, Widespread Rain (90%), Windy. Highs in the mid 70s. Winds: NE 20-40G50

Tonight: Mostly Cloudy, Scattered Showers (30%), Windy. Lows in the upper 60s. Winds: N 20-30G40

Tomorrow: Clearing Skies, Calming Winds. Highs in the upper 70s. Winds: N 5-15

Tropical Update

The area of low pressure may not make it to tropical storm strength. The low is centered about 35 miles WSW of Cape Lookout, NC and moving NE at 17 mph. The disturbance is forecast to move near the coast of North Carolina today and then move away from the coast over the western Atlantic Ocean tonight.

Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. The disturbance is not expected to change much in strength today, and the chances for the system to become a tropical cyclone continue to decrease. Regardless of whether or not this system becomes a tropical cyclone, tropical-storm-force winds and heavy rains are expected over portions of North Carolina today. The disturbance is forecast to strengthen at sea and become a hurricane-force extratropical low over the northwestern Atlantic Ocean by Wednesday evening.
