Man arrested for DWI after moped driver suffers serious injuries in Newport News crash

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A man is suffering life threatening injuries after a moped crash Thursday night.

The incident happened on the Bland Blvd. overpass between and Jefferson Ave., and Warwick Blvd. around 10:30 p.m.

Police say 25-year-old Emilio Riveria Soto was driving a 2010 Toyota Camry and hit a 20-year-old man on a moped.

The driver of the moped suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital before being flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital by Nightingale.

Soto was arrested and charged with DWI: First Offense and Assault: Maiming Another While DWI. He could face additional charges based on the moped driver’s injuries.

The Newport News Crash Team Unit is investigating.
