One killed, two injured in DUI crash on I-64 near I-464 interchange

CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Virginia State Police are investigating an early morning DUI crash on I-64 in Chesapeake that left one person dead and two people injured.

Virginia State Police say the crash occurred around 3 a.m.

They say a vehicle was traveling westbound on I-64 when it ran off the road, overturned, and landed on its side in a deep ditch in the median near the I-464 interchange.

Three people were inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. Virginia State Police say all three people in the car were identified as military members.

Virginia State Police troopers arrived at the scene and were able to help the driver and a backseat passenger escape from the vehicle. The passenger in the front seat had to be extricated.

The driver and backseat passenger were transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The front seat passenger was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Virginia State Police say alcohol was a factor in the crash.

The driver has been identified as 19-year-old Robert Stites. Charges are pending.

At this time no eastbound lanes closures on I-64. As the wreck is cleared the westbound shoulder and two westbound lanes remained closed.
