NORFOLK, Va. - Police are investigating a double shooting Wednesday night that left a 17-year-old man dead.

E. Olney Road and Whitaker Lane

The incident happened in the 300 block of E. Olney Road around 9 p.m.

Police said a 17-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman both suffered gunshot wounds.

Both victims were taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. The male victim died at the hospital. He has been identified as Kaison Mitchell of Portsmouth. Those who know Mitchell say he also lived in Norfolk.

Police said the woman suffered non-life threatening injuries. Her family says she was shot in the leg, she was treated at the hospital and released hours after the shooting.

There is no information available about the circumstances surrounding the incident or possible suspect details. Friends of the victim say they don't know anyone who would want to hurt Mitchell who they described as funny, kind and a good friend.

A memorial began taking form in the early morning hours following the shooting. Balloons, flowers and other mementos lined the ground where Mitchell was shot. Loved ones say they plan to hold a vigil for the 17-year-old at 7:30 on Thursday.
