CHESAPEAKE, Va. – With severe weather expected to hit our area overnight, some homeowners are getting an early start on preparing.

This comes after a tornado touched down in the city Friday – damaging several homes.

”One minute their child was in her bed and thank god he got her out of there because the next minute was windows being blown in," Michelle Smith describes of a neighbor's home.

Heavy downpours, strong and gusty winds, large hail, and tornadoes are all possible late Wednesday into Thursday.

This has Smith concerned.

She says she has a disaster plan in place for tomorrow.

“We’re gonna make sure the alarms on the phone that tell you the weather are gonna go off. “We’d go into our interior bathroom, it’s our only room we have that does not have windows," Smith explained.

But other people don't expect it to be much of a problem.

“I’ll probably take the lawn furniture off the deck," David Timm, who lives in the Norcova area, said. "Don’t want that flying around but for the most part – not really. Chances of getting hit by a tornado are so slim.”

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says always have a disaster plan during a tornado.

They advise you seek sturdy shelter, remove lawn furniture, and not waste time trying to open windows and doors to help with air pressure.
