Two killed in multi-vehicle crash in Southampton County

SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. – Two people were killed in a vehicle crash in Southampton County on Wednesday morning, according to Virginia State Police.

The crash occurred on Smiths Ferry Road (Rt. 258) near S. Quay Road (Rt. 189) just after 6 a.m.

State Police said A 2006 Ford F-350 ran off the roadway into the trees and caught fire.

The driver and one passenger were burned beyond recognition and a third passenger, 64-year-old John Futrell, of Murfreesboro suffered major injuries and was taken to VCU hospital in Richmond.

The unknown male victims were taken to the medical examiners office for positive identification.

At this time, police say the accident involves two fatalities.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of Smiths Ferry Road were closed.
