SUFFOLK, Va. - Suffolk Police have arrested a man suspected of breaking into a home Sunday morning.

Police say Eugene Darnell Smith, 24, forced his way inside of a home in the 1000 block of Cathedral Drive around 5:50 a.m.

According to police, Smith started firing shots as he entered the home and pulled a gun out on the two residents.

Prior to the gunfire, a neighbor says she saw a car parked in the driveway of the home. The driver was repeatedly revving the engine and playing loud music.

Smith ran away from the scene and was at large until he turned himself in at Suffolk Police Headquarters Monday.

Smith was taken into custody and transported to Western Tidewater Regional Jail where he was served warrant for Armed Breaking and Entering, Shooting into Occupied Dwelling, Use of Firearm in Commission of Felony, Destruction of Property and two counts of Brandishing a Firearm.

Smith  is described as a black male who is 4'11" tall and weighs 140 pounds.

News 3 spoke with a man who lives in the home. He did not want to comment, but said "everyone is fine."

Several neighbors tell News 3 that they never have crimes like this in the neighborhood.

"Very scary," says Huddie Williams. "I'm glad they do know who it was so they can get the criminal off the street."
