VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A vehicle pursuit in Virginia Beach has ended in a crash in a neighborhood just off Laskin Road near Birdneck Road.

Virginia Beach Police say they received a call at 5:52 a.m. about a Black Dodge Charger stopped at the intersection of First Colonial and Laskin Road for a long period of time.

An officer responded to the scene to investigate but the driver took off as the officer arrived, which prompted a pursuit.

Virginia Beach Police dispatchers say the pursuit ended when the vehicle went into a ditch at the end of Red Robin Road near Bluebird Drive.

The driver was able to run off.  Authorities are still looking for him at this time. The passenger was taken into police custody.

Neighbors told News 3 the area is quiet and waking up to sirens is uncommon. They say police told them the Charger was a rental and the man who ran from the scene was picked up down the street by a friend.

The car had damage to the back bumper and airbags deployed when it was towed from the scene just before 8:30 a.m.
