Man arrested after driving away with Elizabeth City officer partially inside car

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. – Police have arrested a man who drove away while an officer was partially inside of his vehicle.

Carlton McDonald - charged with Assault Inflicting Injury On a Government Official, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Vandalism to Private Property (3 Counts), Resisting Arrest, Reckless Driving, Driving While License Revoked, Speed to Elude Arrest and Failure to Pay Child Support.

On December 6 around 8 p.m., officers initiated a traffic stop on McMorrine Street after receiving reports that a man in the area had outstanding warrants.

Officers pulled over Carlton McDonald, who had outstanding warrants for failure to pay child support.

When officers tried to pull McDonald from his car, he reached to start the vehicle. An officer reached inside of the vehicle to try to put the car back in park, but McDonald drove off with the officer still partially inside of the vehicle.

McDonald drove approximately 50 to 100 feet before the officer was thrown free from the vehicle. McDonald continued to drive away while police followed him. He finally got out of his car on Parsonage Street and tried to run away.

Officers quickly caught up with McDonald, who physically resisted officers when they tried to arrest him. He was subdued and taken into custody.

Two officers were treated and released from Sentara Hospital with minor injuries.

McDonald was arrested and charged with Assault Inflicting Injury On a Government Official, Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Vandalism to Private Property (3 Counts), Resisting Arrest, Reckless Driving, Driving While License Revoked, Speed to Elude Arrest and Failure to Pay Child Support.

He was taken to Albemarle District Jail under a $95,000 secured bond. He will appear in court on December 8.
