NORFOLK, Va. – Old Dominion University students are encouraged to use a new device in hopes that it will help prevent muggings.

The university’s student newspaper Mace & Crown says the device is called ROBOCOPP and it is a plastic device that can fit onto any key-chain.

When a ring is pulled from the device it puts off a 120 decibel siren that, in theory, should scare off attackers.

The loud sound also alerts people in the area that there is something going on.

ROBOCOPP is a tool that is supposed thwart attackers, instead of having victims fight back.

Mace & Crown says the device is also unique because it is not advertised as a woman’s tool. Many safety devices are aimed at women and the ROBOCOPP is meant for anyone to use.
