Woman arrested after student gets hit by car at Newport News bus stop

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Police have arrested a woman after they say she struck a student at a bus stop with her car and drove away from the scene.

On Monday at 7:37 a.m., officers were called to an accident near the intersection of 48th Street and Madison Avenue.

Courtney Nichelle Singleton was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

While officers were on their way to the scene, they were notified that the driver left the scene of the accident.

When officers arrived, they found an unoccupied Nissan Versa.

According to police, the driver of the Versa did not stop for the southbound stop sign at Madison Avenue. After failing to stop, the vehicle hit another vehicle traveling westbound on 48th Street, which had the right-of-way.

After the crash, police say the driver of the Versa hit a student waiting at a bus stop.

The student was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Police say 28-year-old Courtney Singleton, the driver of the Versa, ran from the scene and was later found in a nearby residence.

Singleton was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
