NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk police have confirmed that a suspected police officer impersonator was an officer on his way home from work.

Dispatchers received a call Tuesday about a man wearing a “cloth” badge speaking to two girls, a 7-year-old and 9-year-old.

The incident happened around 5:40 p.m. in the 9700 block of 8th View Street.

Norfolk detectives say the officer, who was still dressed in his full uniform, was in his personal vehicle when he saw several kids playing in the roadway, one of which was almost hit by a car.

The officer stopped to talk with the children to get them out of the roadway and play safely on the sidewalk or yard.

The officer drove home after the children were safely out of the roadway.

Police say there is no foul play, no police impersonation concern, nor any attempted abduction incident.
