COURTLAND, Va. - A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the homicide of the 25-year-old mother of his two children.
The Southampton County Sheriff's Office says 30-year-old Bobby Boone Jr. is believed to have stabbed 25-year-old Tanisha Freeman several times.
According to her neighbor and close friend, Freeman just celebrated a birthday on Saturday.
"I wish I was home to talk to her for that last time, to see her for that last time, to joke around with her for that last time," says Jowana Myrick, who was unable to meet Freeman Saturday night. "It's a hard pill to swallow."
Authorities say Freeman had a fatal stab wound to the neck. She was found at her apartment in the 25000 block of Oak Trail in Courtland just after 7 a.m. and pronounced dead at the scene.
Major Gene Drewery with the Southampton County Sheriff's Office says one of Boone's family members was alerted to check on the children this morning. That family member then called 9-1-1.
They believe Freeman was killed almost two hours before she was found.
"It was an ugly scene," said Major Drewery.
Friends say Freeman, nicknamed "Piggy," was taking classes to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.
They describe her as a loving, funny, great mother and friend.
"All we've got to do is pray, stick together, and know she's watching down on us," says Myrick.
Boone was found in his residence and he appeared to have stabbed himself, according to Major Drewery.
He is being held at the Southampton County Jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned at Southampton County General District Court on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
