It's important to plan ahead when it comes to any type of bad weather, but there's one item that's often overlooked--an NOAA weather radio.

A weather radio can help you receive severe weather and critical hazards information by providing continuous broadcasts 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

According to the national weather service, computer generated messages are repeated every four to six minutes and are routinely updates. During emergencies, the routine broadcasts are interrupted with special warning messages that could save your life.

The radio works while the power is out and cell towers are down.

The National Weather Service held a special event at Walgreens Thursday to help educate the public on the importance of the radio.
