NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - If you walk down the halls of Crittendon Middle School, you'll likely be greeted by Master Police Officer Melissa Gretsinger.

The School Resource Officer has made her mark on the students over her 5 years at the school and this year she earned an award at the annual Crime Line Ceremony .

Gretsinger started a clothing closet for students who do not have clean clothes or clothes that stay within dress code. It all started after she heard of homeless students not wanting to come to school because his clothes were dirty. Not only did Gretsinger get him clean clothes, but found his family a place to live.

How it works; the students can shop right in the school if they do not have the appropriate attire at home. Gretsinger gets donations or shops at local thrifts shops for kids clothes, stuff they will not be embarrassed to wear.

She also runs the school supply store where students can purchase notebooks, pencils, etc., with 'Cougar Cash.' The currency is earned for good grades or good deeds.

Gretsinger, when asked 'why do you do it,' she replied "as a Christian and a good person, it's just what you do. I treat these kids how I want my kids and my family to be treated."
