Virginia State Police investigating two fatal Brunswick County crashes

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, Va. – State Police are investigating two separate single-vehicle fatal crashes that occurred over the weekend.

Troopers responded to a crash that happened on Saturday at 10:17 a.m. on Interstate 85.

Destiny Freeman was driving a 2007 Saturn Aura on I-85 when it ran ran off the interstate, struck a tree and overturned.

Freeman was wearing a seat belt and was not injured. A passenger in the car, 18-year-old Amari Newton, was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.

Another passenger, a 20-year-old man, was not wearing his seat belt and was ejected from the car. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

Freeman was involved with reckless driving.

Another crash occurred on Sunday at 3:10 a.m. on Route 58.

20-year-old Mekiel Banks of Chicago, Ill. was driving a 2006 Audi A4 on Route 58 when it ran off the side of the highway, struck a culvert, struck two trees and finally came to rest in the median.

The passenger in the car, Howard Griffin of Nashville, Tenn., was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.

Banks was charged with reckless driving.

Both crashes remain under investigation.
