Donald McEachin (D), running for U.S. House of Representatives in Virginia’s 4th District

1. Why are you running for office?

I am running for office to serve the residents of the Fourth Congressional District, and to do what I can to improve their lives. I want to create more well-paying jobs, improve our public schools, keep folks safe and secure, and ensure that we honor our commitments to veterans and military personnel in recognition of the great sacrifices they make.

2. Why should people vote for you?

I am committed to serving the citizens of the Fourth Congressional District, and I have a record of public service. As a state senator, I have worked for good schools, good jobs, and help for our seniors, children, and other vulnerable citizens. I want to take those same priorities to Washington.

3. What’s your favorite thing about the area you want to represent?

The Fourth District is like a microcosm of the Commonwealth, with diverse communities and urban, suburban and rural areas. As I have travelled around the district, I have been so impressed with the people I have met – hardworking, devoted, sincere, and open-minded. It has been a wonderful experience and I look forward to continuing to engage with folks all around the district after this election.

4. What is the biggest problem your area is facing, how will you fix it?

For any community or family to succeed, there must be sufficient well-paying jobs. To make this a reality, we need strong public schools (so our students graduate with the skills to get and keep these jobs). We need good transportation (so folks can get to and from work). And we need broadband Internet access throughout the district (to attract good employers and expand opportunities).

5. Describe Donald Trump in max 3 words?

Dangerous, bigoted, self-centered.

6. Describe Hillary Clinton in max 3 words?

Dedicated, experienced, competent.

7. What do you do for a living? Why do you do it?

I am an attorney and I take on the big insurance companies who prey on everyday Americans.

8. You’re going to be marooned on a tropical island for a week, you can only bring 1 thing – what is it?

A good book

9. What do you think of Colin Kaepernick?

Not sure he should have been put back in as the starter… In all seriousness, I respect his right to peacefully protest and express his opinion. His actions remind us what makes this a great country – the fact that people can peacefully protest the government without fear. The same goes for those who disagree with his actions – they, too, can peacefully state their disagreement with his behavior. So when I see Colin Kaepernick kneel, I remember how fortunate we are to live in a thriving democracy.

10. Would you vote to fund light rail expansion in your area?

I support greater investments in transit, including rail. I would gladly support funding for light rail in the Fourth if a specific project seemed likely to create economic opportunity or improve people’s quality of life at a reasonable cost.

11. Will you respect the outcome of the election?

Of course. (This should not have to be a question.)

12. Favorite TV Show?

Star Trek.
