CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Chesapeake City Council voted Tuesday night to allow the motto ‘In God We Trust’ to be displayed in the City Council Chambers and in Chesapeake City Hall.

The request was made by City Councilwoman Suzy Kelly.

City Council voted in favor of the resolution 7-0 with Vice Mayor West and Councilman Davis excused.

The motto will be displayed “in the City Council Chambers or other prominent location at City Hall.”

‘In God We Trust’ was adopted as the national motto of the United States on July 30, 1956 and has been used on United States currency since 1864. It currently appears above the entrance to the Senate Chamber, as well as above the Speaker’s dais in the House of Representatives.
