HAMPTON, Va. - The City of Hampton is in need of a new aquatics center and may be getting one.

Community Development Director Terry O'Neill says something like the center they are looking to build has never been built in Hampton Roads.

Right now if you want to swim in Hampton there are only two public facilities available, the Fort Monroe Community Center and the Hampton Aquatics Center.

The proposal is to build a $31.5 million aquatics center with an Olympic-sized pool, a smaller lap pool, and an outdoor splash pool with water slides.

"The missing piece that doesn’t currently exist is a national caliber aquatic center that would allow the region to attract competitions to this region," O'Neill said.

The center would be by the Coliseum and would hopefully attract families and visitors.

Hampton is also considering another option which would be to build a replacement pool, costing around $15 million.
