Chesapeake kitchen fire damages condo, displaces 6

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Fire officials tells News 3 an overnight kitchen fire is to blame for the damage to a Chesapeake condo.

Firefighters were called to the 4000 block of Leystone Dr., off of Portsmouth Blvd. in Chesapeake around 2:15 a.m. Chesapeake Fire Capt. Scott Saunders said smoke could be seen coming from the condo and a firefighter began to fight the blaze inside.

Fire officials said the fire started in the kitchen. Crews were able to put it out before it spread. Investigators said the cause of the fire is related to unattended cooking.

No one was hurt in the fire. One person who lived in the unit where the fire started is now displaced. The home adjacent to the one with the fire was damaged by water. The 5 people who lived there are also displaced at this time.

On the door of the effected property is an orange “No Trespassing” notice, warning those who enter that the space is unsafe to inhabit.
