Dangerous category 4 hurricane heading for Bermuda

Nicole is now an extremely dangerous category 4 hurricane. Hurricane Nicole is heading for Bermuda. Nicole is about 180 miles SSW of Bermuda and moving NNE at 12 mph. An increase in forward speed is expected Thursday, followed by a turn toward the northwest. An increase in forward speed is expected by Thursday night. On this current track, the center of Nicole will pass over or near Bermuda on Thursday.

Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph with higher gusts. Little change is expected overnight. Nicole is forecast to be a major hurricane when it moves near Bermuda.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 65 miles from the center. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160 miles.

According to the National Hurricane Center, while hurricanes often affect Bermuda, a hurricane of this strength is rare. There have been only seven major hurricanes that have passed within 40 nautical miles of Bermuda. This is according to the Atlantic hurricane database, which dates back to 1851.
