Police: man dies while checking storm damage in Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – A man died after going outside of his home to check for storm damage from Hurricane Matthew, according to police.

Just after midnight on October 9, dispatch received a call in regards to a drowning in the first block of Sherry Dell Drive.

Both Hampton Fire and Rescue and officers from the Hampton Police Department responded to the scene.

Police say bystanders found the man unresponsive in standing flood water.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the death appears storm related, and of natural causes but an investigation is ongoing. The cause of the man’s death is still unknown.
