falconHAMPTON, Va. – Virginia Department of Transportation crews helped to rescue an injured Peregrine Falcon on Wednesday.

The falcon was sitting against the jersey wall of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel’s South Island.

A Virginia Beach photographer saw the bird and told tunnel crews.

The bird was rescued, wrapped in a towel and given to a raptor rehabilitation location in South Norfolk.

The falcon was taken to the Wildlife Center of Virginia in Waynesboro Thursday where it was examined by a doctor.

The doctor determined that the falcon had an open fracture on the left wing and the bone was exposed and had dried out. Because the bone was too dry, the fracture could not be repaired. The falcon was euthanized Thursday following the initial exam.
