NEWPORT NEWS, Va.  – A man who escaped from Newport News City Jail’s booking area Tuesday evening has turned himself in.

Daniel Panton, 21,  was arrested on charges of grand larceny and possession of burglary tools on Tuesday.  He was brought to the booking area around 5:20 p.m. and escaped while handcuffed to a bench waiting to be processed.

Authorities searched for Panton until he called police Wednesday morning to say he wanted to turn himself in.

Panton was taken back into custody shortly before 8 a.m. in the area of Colony Road and Warwick Boulevard and then taken back to Newport News City Jail.

An internal investigation is underway to determine how Panton got away.
