VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – A rabid bobcat was found in the 2000 block of Pungo Ridge Court in the Pungo area of Virginia Beach, according to the Virginia Beach Department of Health.

The bobcat was deceased and tested positive for rabies.

Residents who may have been exposed to the animal to contact a Health Department Representative at 576-6822. Do not call 911 unless you have an emergency.

If your pet has come in contact with a rabid animal, the Health Department would like to be notified as well.

Rabies can be fatal, but it’s preventable. Health officials remind citizens to follow these guidelines:

1. Vaccinate your pets.

2. Report all exposures to animals (usually bites and scratches) to your doctor and the local
health department.

3. Enjoy wildlife from a distance – don’t feed or encourage wild animals such as raccoons, skunks or foxes to visit your premises.
