Blue Bell Ice Cream recalls products distributed to N.C., Va., and other states due to Listeria concerns

A Blue Bell Ice Cream third party vendor has voluntarily recalled select products in a Sylacauga, Alabama, plant because of Listeria concerns.

The products were made with a chocolate chip cookie dough ingredient supplied by Aspen Hills and may contain Listeria monocytogenes.

The products produced with the chocolate chip cookie dough pieces were distributed in the following ten states Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Listeria can cause serious sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria infection can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths in pregnant woman.

The products can be identified by the code date found on the bottom of the carton.

No illnesses have been reported to date.  Blue Bell identified a potential problem through intensified internal testing and notified Aspen Hills. Aspen Hills then issued a voluntary recall of the products supplied to Blue Bell.
