September marks a huge anniversary for the Muppets – 40 years!

The Muppet Show premiered in September 1976 in the U.K. after American TV passed on Jim Henson’s loveable creatures twice.

Ultimately 120 episodes aired in the U.K. between September 1976 and March 1981 before the show finally crossed the pond and went into syndication in the United States.

The Muppets first feature film, ‘The Muppet Movie’ hit theaters in 1979 and since then, there have been 9 more feature films.

The Muppets have also continued their TV success with a hit cartoon, Muppet Babies, that aired from 1984 to 1991, and multiple television specials.

Disney bought the rights to the Muppets in 2004 for $75 million.
