VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Virginia Beach SPCA Wildlife Department rescued 78 squirrels days after Hermine hit Hampton Roads.

People in the program were able to save 60 of the 78 rescued. Some of the animals arrived in critical condition.

12 baby squirrels are still in the care of the VBSPCA and others have been sent to licensed volunteer home-based rehabilitators.

The rehabilitators are providing ongoing and very regimented care and feeding that the animals require.

In order to care for these animals and others, the VBSPCA is asking for extra hand and bath towels, monetary donations to cover the costs for rehabilitation supplies, and some fresh fruit or raw, unsalted nuts to help the squirrels.

The squirrels will be released back into the wild when their lengthy rehabilitation process is complete, for the babies this will be when they reach about 15-18 weeks of age.
