PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Colonel David Simons is no longer the Hampton Roads Regional Jail Superintendent.
Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe will run the jail, effective on Monday.
According to the Norfolk Sheriff's Office, Simons had previously submitted retirement papers effective Oct. 1 but he had offered to stay on until a replacement was hired.
The jail's personnel committee voted Friday to accept his retirement, effective Oct. 1, and remove him from the position Monday. The committee also voted to appoint Sheriff McCabe as interim superintendent.

Sheriff McCabe will continue his regular duties at the Norfolk Sheriff's Office while taking on the additional role.
An Operations Review Team made up of senior command staff will be on-site at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail assessing operating procedures and polices. All information collected will be reported to Sheriff McCabe.
"I am appreciative of the confidence that the HRRJ board has in me to serve temporarily in this position, especially from my fellow sheriff's on the board," McCabe said.
The news comes one week after Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring asked federal authorities to examine whether or not inmates are getting the proper medical care in the jail.
