CHICAGO – A Chicago woman related to professional basketball player Dwyane Wade was shot and killed on Chicago's South Side Friday afternoon, according to WGN-TV.
According to police, the 32-year-old woman was shot in the head and arm near 64th and Calumet in the Parkway Gardens neighborhood around 3:30 p.m.
Family members identified the victim as Nykea Aldridge, the mother of four children, and the first cousin of Chicago Bulls player Dwyane Wade.
Pastor Jolinda Wade, Nykea's aunt, spoke to media outside the hospital Friday evening saying the family believes it was "senseless." "We ask everyone to pray for us," Wade said.
Wade tweeted Friday night saying:
Nykea's mother was at the news conference but did not speak.
Police say the woman was pushing a child in the stroller when two male approached and shots rang out.
Initially police said Nykea was walking with a man.
Police say a relative took custody of the child who was in the stroller at the time of the shooting.
Family says Nykea was registering her child or children at Dulles Elementary School, which is nearby, at the time of the shooting.
Nykea was taken to the hospital where she died.
Police are questioning two men in connection with the shooting.
