VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A raccoon found on the ocean side of the 3900 block of Atlantic Ave. has tested positive for rabies.

The raccoon is deceased, according to the city of Virginia Beach. Officials with the health department say someone noticed the raccoon looking disoriented and called animal control. Once animal control captured it, it was humanely killed and tested for rabies, the results were positive.

"I wanted to make sure that it got tested because of the area it was at the Oceanfront that I wanted to make sure that no one was exposed to this raccoon," said Valerie Thompson, with the Virginia Beach Health Department.

No one was attacked by the raccoon, according to officials. If anyone in your household, including pets, has come in contact with stray or wild animals in the area within the past week you are urged to contact your physician.
