HAMPTON, Va. – Deputies warned the public of a phone scam on Monday.

In the scam call, people are pretending to be from the Hampton’s Sheriff’s department and they are telling the victims that they’ve missed jury duty.

The impersonators then say the victim owes a fine in order to avoid arrest warrants, insisting they pay it with the use of money cards.

The city reminds the public that departments will never call and collect fines over the phone. The sheriff’s office says if you get a call that sounds like this not to give out any information.

Call the Hampton Sheriff’s Office with any information at 757-727-6280.
