CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Chesapeake native Ben Smith has traveled to Carson, California to compete in the CrossFit Games for the 8th time.

Smith, who owns CrossFit Krypton in Chesapeake, won the Games in 2015.

The CrossFit Games is a competition that challenges competitors over 13 events consisting of an assortment of aerobic, weightlifting, and gymnastics movements, among other things. Winners are deemed the “Fittest on Earth.”

The CrossFit Games began in 2007 on a small ranch in Aromas, California and have since grown exponentially. The Games have been held at the StubHub Center in Carson, California since 2010.

Individuals and teams looking to compete must first participate in a worldwide “Open” where over 300,000 athletes compete in five workouts to win a spot in one of eight regional events. The top five men, women and teams at each regional event move on to compete in the games.

Smith has won the Mid-Atlantic/Atlantic regional six of his eight times competing. He has reached the podium in the CrossFit Games three times, coming in 3rd in 2011 and 2013, and winning in 2015.
