NORFOLK -Practice for the Norfolk Nighthawks took a scary turn Monday night when shots rang out near the field they were practicing on.
According the Norfolk Police, the shooting happened on Mariners Way at 6:39 p.m. The team was practicing at Oceanair Elementary school at the time, which backs up to where the incident happened. Coaches say they quickly took action to get all the children to shelter and proceeded to call each child's parent to tell them what happened.
Parents say they were terrified to hear what happened only feet away from their children's practice, but are thankful to the coaches for their quick action and cautiousness.
Practice ended early on Monday night, the team will practice Tuesday night, and Norfolk Police will be present to make sure children feel safe.
