VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Virginia Beach Police are urging drivers to be cautious around trucks carrying oversized deliveries to construction sites.

Trucks have been delivering the loads to the Lesner Bridge construction site. The weight of the truck plus the load is approximately 280,000 pounds. The stopping distance at 30 miles per hour is over a football field in length.

Police say they’ve witnessed several near accidents involving vehicles from Northampton Boulevard to the New Lesner Bridge, and again on the return route back to I-64.

Officials  want to remind drivers that if a vehicle cuts in front of, or suddenly stops in front of an oversized truck, it can cause a serious accident resulting in life-threatening injuries or even death.

Officers will be giving extra attention to this danger and issue tickets for failing to yield to trucks.

Trucks delivering materials are required to have two private escorting vehicles and two police vehicles at all times while on city streets. The hours of operation for the oversize load are from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
