NORFOLK, Va. – The Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore is taking initiatives towards fighting child hunger throughout the summer.

Through the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Summer Food Service Program, the Foodbank will provide meals, at no cost, to more than 900 children participating in summer programs and camps across Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore.

With more than 87,000 children in the FoodBank’s service area eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch, the beginning of summer break means many children have little to no access to consistent nutritional food.

“The summer months are particularly challenging for the Foodbank— needs increase and resources typically wane,” said Ruth Jones Nichols, CEO of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and The Eastern Shore.

“Our partnership with the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program is strategic and integral to our mission, as it enables us to extend our services to children facing hunger year round.”
