VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - After the mass shooting in Orlando local residents have expressed concern regarding security at upcoming events.

After speaking to the Operations Manager at Proper Staffing and Security, we have some answers for Hampton Roads residents.

Michael Luck said his private company works venues of all sizes and often partners with law enforcement to amp up security during major events and festivals. Together they focus their efforts on access points as well as the proper ratio and placement of armed and unarmed members throughout the event.

Luck said people attending need to be self aware and report suspicious activities to authorities to combat criminal activity at events like these.

Norfolk Police released a statement on Monday addressing upcoming events and safety precautions being taken:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Orlando and the families and friends of those killed or injured. We also want to thank the brave first responders, who undoubtedly, saved many lives following their reaction to the mass shooting. While there are no known threats to the City of Norfolk, the Norfolk Police Department is working closely with state and federal agencies to support the safety and welfare of our Norfolk community members.
Public safety will remain a top priority. The Norfolk Police Department is increasing police presence in places of high public concentration and areas of mass gathering. Regarding this weekend’s PrideFest celebrations, the Norfolk Police Department will continue to work closely with the LGBTQ community to support their safety. As we continue to build and foster our partnerships, our number one priority is ensuring that Norfolk remains a safe community to live, work, and play. As always, we remind the public, 'If you see something, say something!'"

Virginia Beach Police released a similar statement:

"The men and women of the VBPD were saddened by the events that occurred in Orlando Florida early Sunday morning. The senseless death of just one innocent life is tragic. The scale of this reported act of terrorism is beyond catastrophic and defies reasonable explanation. We remain committed to protecting the citizens and visitors who live, work and vacation in Virginia Beach. Our criminal intelligence unit is vigilant in proactively monitoring social media through proactive intelligence led policing strategies that includes active participation and partnerships with Local, State and Federal agencies in evaluating potential threats to our city.

The leadership of the VBPD will monitor events and plan accordingly."
