VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - More than 11,000 sand soccer players are flooding the Virginia Beach Oceanfront this weekend for the North American Sand Soccer Championships. Teams from Spain, Colombia, and Costa Rica are some of the international draws from the 1,000 teams participating.
Games started Friday morning and continue through Sunday afternoon starting at 15th street and ending at 34th street.
"It's an international event with us now, the notoriety makes this event bigger and bigger every year," says Director of Operations Matt Whalen.
This is considered the "World Cup of sand soccer" by players and tournament-goers.
