SUFFOLK, Va. – The “Why I wear the badge” campaign is getting some local attention from the Suffolk Police Department.

The campaign is supported by the International Association of Chiefs of Police. They hope it will highlight diversity and commitment within law enforcement professions.

The IACP explains that the badge is a symbol of integrity, strength, and courage. They hope that the campaign can utilize pictures, videos and testimonials worldwide to encourage officers to share their stories.

Detective Tiffany Whitten was highlighted on the Suffolk Police Department Facebook page on Tuesday.

She explained in a post why she wears the badge:

“The day I took the oath and my Mother pinned on this massive responsibility to my chest, I knew my life would be different. I would spend many hours away from my family, missing holidays, birthdays, and important life events. Though at times it’s a thankless job, I am proud to be in a profession that I can help make a difference in someone’s life. I wear the badge to seek truth and justice. In a cynical word filled with lies, hate, and evil, to me this badge represents hope, honesty, integrity, and truth. The ones who wear this shiny piece of metal above their heart, whether it is a shield or a star, are meant to represent the good in the world and provide safety and encouragement to those in need. It’s not without struggle and personal sacrifices, but it’s worth it to do the right thing. I wear the badge with pride and remember that this metal above my heart represents the victims that I serve.”

The hashtag #WhyIWearTheBadge allows officers’ stories to be connected and found by anyone around the world.
