NEWPORT NEWS, Va . – Tuesday, the Newport News Sheriff’s Office measured Spike and Dutch, two of their five K-9 deputies, for life-saving, bullet-resistant vests.

These measurements will help ensure the vests fit properly, providing both safety and comfort to the K-9s as they work.

Dutch, the yellow lab, is involved in narcotics searches.

Spike, the Dutch Shepard-Belgian Malinois mix, also works in narcotics searches and is in training for patrol.

Thanks to a grant from the Police Association of Virginia, these K-9s can now be fully protected when conducting search-and-rescue, patrol and narcotics search. Efforts continue for further funding so all five K-9s can be outfitted with these vests as well.
