CHESAPEAKE, Va. – A portion of Kempsville Road that was closed in Chesapeake due to a sewer line break has reopened.

Westbound Kempsville Road at Hunningdon Lakes Blvd (between Volvo Pkwy and Greenbrier Pkwy) was closed to traffic for nearly three days.

A detour via Volvo Parkway and Greenbrier Parkway was marked.  Eastbound Kempsville Road remained open.

Crews were called to the area around 9:30 p.m. Monday night when informed about the leak.

The leak was in a 30-inch ductile iron pipeline. The cause is still unknown. The contents of the pipe that were not recovered, appeared to be leaking into the storm water retention ponds in the immediate vicinity.

Residents are asked to avoid recreational activities in the storm water retention lakes in the Greenbrier East neighborhood until further notice.

The Department of Environmental Quality has been notified.

The road was fully open Thursday afternoon.
