Police identify teen killed in overnight shooting in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A teenage boy was shot and killed in the 300 block of Deputy Lane in Newport News early Sunday.

It happened just before 1 a.m.

Officers were called to the area in reference to multiple gunshots. Neighbors told NewsChannel 3 the boy was found lying on the ground in between the apartments and the park in the 300 block of Jury Lane. Police said he had multiple life threatening gun shot wounds

Police identified the victim as 17-year-old Jermell Hayes of Hampton.

Residents who live just feet from where it happened said the scene of the crime is close to the park and basketball court where children play all year long.

"My main concern is the young kids and it seems like everything happens right here (near the park) Eight to nine months ago they had a shoot out right here. Two cars parked shooting at each other but it's a bunch of kids right here every day it's like this," said Augustine Carter Junior who lives just a few doors down from where the victim was found.

Newport News Police are working to gather more details and have not released any information about a suspect.
