NORFOLK, Va. - Nauticus hosted their 10th annual  MATE Mid - Atlantic Regional Underwater Robotics Competition Saturday at Old Dominion University Recreation and Wellness Center.

The theme this year was "From the Gulf of Mexico to Jupiter's Moon Europa: ROV Encounters in Inner and Outer Space." Students from elementary to high school worked in teams designing remote controlled vehicles (ROVs).

Each design had to be able to photograph ocean samples of deep sea coral, survey the ocean floor for model NASA mini cube space satellites and other deep sea adventures.

A panel of judges reviewed each design.

Fifteen teams competed this year, from beginner level Scout to advanced level Ranger.

Teams came from Delaware, Virginia and North Carolina. The winning Ranger team advances to the International Competition in Houston, Texas this summer.
