donn mann NEPAL - Former Navy SEAL Don Mann had to abruptly end his lifelong dream of reaching the top of Mount Everest this week.

The elite athlete and thrill-seeker developed high altitude cerebral edema, meaning his brain was beginning to swell.  Mann had to be flown off the mountain for emergency care.  He is now resting and recovering in Virginia.

Mann was climbing Mount Everest to raise funds and awareness for veterans' issues.  The former SEAL Team 6 member has an impressive athletic history, including several mountain summits, multiple marathons in one day, and dual Ironman competitions.

Hours before leaving for Nepal, Mann told NewsChannel 3 he was aware of the growing risk of climbing the world's talent mountain, but was willing to give it a try.
