VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The owners of Mayfair Mews Apartments have decided to demolish their units in their complex.

Residents' leases will end July 31, 2016.

A NewsChannel 3 viewer says the residents of the apartments were notified by a piece of paper and rubber band at their door.

A resident showed us a photo of the following letter signed by Covington & Associates Realtors President Joe P. Covington:

The owners of Mayfair Mews Apartments have been weighing several options with regard to the future of the complex. Those options include; renovation of the existing units and construction of additional units, demolition of the existing apartments and construction of new apartments and lastly, redevelopment of the site for a different use. For a number of compelling reasons, they have decided to demolish the units and redevelop the site.

Accordingly, please accept this letter as verification of the owners notice to terminate your lease effective July 31, 2016. This notice is in accordance with the terms of your lease and provides you with more than 3 months time to make plans for alternative living arrangements. My office is available to assist you with a list of apartment communities in the immediate area with comparable rent structures.

Please be advised that the utilities will be turned off effective August 1, 2016. Inspection of your unit and return of any security deposit due will be handled within 30 days of your move out.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter. Enclosed please find a list of apartment communities in your area for consideration.

Sincerely,

Joe P. Covington

On April 6,  2012, aNavy jet fell from the sky and into the Mayfair Mews Apartment Complex and the residents were displaced for more than a month.

The majority of the people who live at Mayfair Mews are elderly, on a fixed income, disabled, retired, etc. They told NewsChannel 3 this is one of the only places they can afford and it has become like a family for them.

Residents are saddened by the news that they have to move. The notice states they must be out by July 31st.
