Newport News, VA. – When you see 9-year-old Selah Holston shopping for tank tops around Hampton Roads, she is not just looking for her next outfit. She is mining for materials to put a smile on the faces of girls across the globe.

With a tank top, duct tape and a lot of passion, Selah designs purses as part of her non-profit Selah’s Diamonds.

“I wanted the non-profit to make girls feel special, unique and loved,” said Selah. “Not every girl gets that and it would be nice if every girl could feel special…”

So far, she has sent more than 300 handmade tank top purses to underprivileged girls in Tanzania, Nigeria, Senegal and here in the United States.

Her non-profit’s mission is to encourage self-esteem and confidence in girls everywhere.

“Very proud of her heart that God has given her,” said Selah’s mother Jondahlyn Holston, who explained that Selah came up with the idea about two years ago in a class for a career project.

“She hasn’t stopped. She keeps going,” he mother said. “We had to create a home office for her so that she could have the space to do it, because almost every day of her life, she spends in this effort.”

Selah is hoping to make 500 shirts this summer and travel to Africa. Her parents currently fund her project, but she also sells her handmade purses and handmade jewelry to support her non-profit.  She also accepts donations to help purchase materials for the donated purses.
