Suffolk, Va. – Thanks to a few concerned citizens, animal control and Suffolk Fire and Rescue, a dog’s life was saved after crews pulled her from the Nansemond River on Sunday.

Authorities were notified about the dog in the water in the 100 block of Riverside Drive in the Bennett’s Creek Landing neighborhood at 3:06 p.m.

The tides kept pulling the dog farther out into the water as she tried to swim toward the shore.

Crews launched a Zodiac boat to try to get her back to the shore. Animal Control staff got into the water and were able to secure the dog with a harness and a noose.

The dog was finally brought to shore at 3:21 p.m.

They do not know how long the dog was in the water.

None of the neighbors recognized the dog and crews are now working to find the owner.

The dog is described as an older female Labrador mix and she’s black in color.

The dog was taken to a local vet to be checked out and it will then go to Suffolk Animal Care.
