20-year library media specialist wins 2016 City-Wide Teacher of the Year in Suffolk

Suffolk Public Schools honored some pretty amazing educators this week.

They crowned the 2016 City-Wide Teacher of the year and honored a few other special teachers as well.

Michele Waggoner of Oakland Elementary School won teacher of the year for her innovation, creativity, enthusiasm and work ethic.

She’s worked with the school system for 20 years and has served in several positions including librarian and a first and second grade teacher.

Wagner holds a bachelors degree from Christopher Newport and two master’s degrees from Old Dominion University.

She has worked to get grant funding to supplement the school’s library book collection. She’s successfully increased the number of  books from 5,200 to 7,600.

Tracy Halvorson, a social studies teacher at John Yeates Middle School was named the 2016 Middle School Teacher of the Year; Arianne Williams of Lakeland High School was named the 2016 High School Teacher of the Year; and Cierra French of Elephant’s Fork Elementary School was named the 2016 City-Wide Rookie Teacher of the Year.
