People Taking Action: NC teacher encourages students, gives back to community

Posted

Moyock, NC - NewsChannel 3 is recognizing one pretty special teacher in Moyock, North Carolina who is impacting lives both in the classroom and outside of it.

NewsChannel 3's Kurt Williams, along with Laura Hughes husband and children, walked in and surprised her on the job. The superintendent and principal were also there.

She was trying to figure out why everyone was there.

"I'm trying to piece together all these wonderful people and why they're in my classroom," said a shocked Hughes.

A parent of one of her students sent us an email.

"Mrs. Hughes is someone who became a teacher because she loves to teach, loves kids and cares about their future and their present," read part of the email from Stacy Belue.

Belue also shared how Hughes takes action to get involved in the community.

"This year it was Crayontober. The kids collected boxes of crayons to be donated to CHKD," wrote Belue.

In just a few days, the students hauled 283 boxes of crayons to the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters.

Last year, Hughes organized a Socktober campaign. Through her efforts, her class and the entire school raised 600 pairs of socks to be given to the homeless community.

For her efforts, NewsChannel 3 presented Hughes with a People Taking Action Award and a $300 Visa giftcard with our community partners Southern Bank.
